Must See And Do In Amsterdam

Stroll the canals: Amsterdam is famous for its beautiful canals, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You can walk along the canal ring, explore the charming neighborhoods like the Jordaan and the Nine Streets, or take a boat tour to see the city from a different perspective.

Visit the Anne Frank House: This is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam, where you can learn about the life and diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis during World War II. You can see the secret annex where she and her family lived for two years, and the original pages of her diary.

Rijksmuseum: This is the largest and most prestigious museum in the Netherlands, which showcases the art and history of the country from the Middle Ages to the present day. You can admire the masterpieces of Dutch painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh, as well as other exhibits such as Delftware, sculptures, and Asian art.

Try herring from a herring cart: This is a traditional Dutch snack that consists of raw herring served with pickles and onions. You can find herring carts all over the city, especially near the Central Station and the Dam Square. The best time to try it is between May and July, when the fish is at its freshest.

See windmills, countryside and beaches: If you want to escape the city for a day, you can easily reach the surrounding areas by train, bike, or car. You can visit the picturesque town of Haarlem, the historic village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, the cheese market of Alkmaar, the flower fields of Keukenhof, the windmills of Zaanse Schans, or the beaches of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal.

Best Time to Visit

June to August is the most popular and pleasant. The weather is warm and sunny, and there are many outdoor activities and festivals to enjoy. However, this also means that the city is crowded and expensive, and you may have to deal with long lines and wait times at the attractions.

April and May are known for Spring or September and November during fall, which is cheaper and not crowded. These are known as shoulder seasons, when the weather is still mild, and the flowers are blooming, or the leaves are changing colors. You can also witness some of the city’s famous events, such as the Tulip Festival, King’s Day, and the Light Festival.
