Try herring from a herring cart: This is a traditional Dutch snack that consists of raw herring served with pickles and onions. You can find herring carts all over the city, especially near the Central Station and the Dam Square. The best time to try it is between May and July, when the fish is at its freshest.

See windmills, countryside and beaches: If you want to escape the city for a day, you can easily reach the surrounding areas by train, bike, or car. You can visit the picturesque town of Haarlem, the historic village of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, the cheese market of Alkmaar, the flower fields of Keukenhof, the windmills of Zaanse Schans, or the beaches of Zandvoort and Bloemendaal.

June to August is the most popular and pleasant. The weather is warm and sunny, and there are many outdoor activities and festivals to enjoy. However, this also means that the city is crowded and expensive, and you may have to deal with long lines and wait times at the attractions.

April and May are known for Spring or September and November during fall, which is cheaper and not crowded. These are known as shoulder seasons, when the weather is still mild, and the flowers are blooming, or the leaves are changing colors. You can also witness some of the city’s famous events, such as the Tulip Festival, King’s Day, and the Light Festival.
